Bastia

 

Ik was 11 toen we in de lagere school als opdracht handwerk een babytruitje breiden. Ik herinner me vaag mijn pastelblauw en -roze truitje met vliegtuigknoopjes. En ik kan me voorstellen dat mijn tante het babycadeautje snel weggemoffeld heeft want ik heb het daarna nooit meer terug gezien 😉 .

Maar zie, meer dan 20 jaar later kreeg de breimicrobe me terug te pakken. Toen ik vorige maand onverwachts enkele daagjes in Gent doorbracht, laadde ik mijn valies op de terugweg met wat extra kilo’s Nederlandstalig leesvoer.

Toen ik in Jules en Julie voor groot en klein bladerde, viel mijn oog direct op het Bastia – vestje.

In vergelijking met naaien gaat breien tergend traag. Maar het meeneem-gehalte van zo’n breiwerk, dat is toch echt fijn. Wachten wordt plots zoveel plezanter. 

Breileek zijnde, liep ik wel eens vast. Maar gelukkig maakt internet de wereld zoveel kleiner en was het Julie zelf die me op instagram en per mail terug op het juiste spoor zette. 

Ik koos toevallig een gelijkaardige tint als het voorbeeld in het boek, maar het past zo mooi bij haar oogjes, meneer 😉

It’s starting to look like Fall, here in Texas and I took my middle girl to a clothing store for some much needed pants. They had a -40% deal going on and I used some rewards so I ended up paying twenty-ish dollars for 3  brandnew pairs of pants (and I even got a $25 reward to spend in December. Gosh… that’s just too cheap to be right). With all this I felt a little crazy, knowing that I could buy a perfectly knitted sweater for less than the money I spend on wool earlier.  

But I guess handmade is not about money, it’s about love, sustainability and about perfect imperfections, right?

Poppies and carnations

Over herfst kunnen we voorlopig alleen maar dromen. Dus blijven we dapper zomerjurkjes naaien.

It feels good to finally catch up on baby gifts. And since here in sunny Texas, it does not feel like fall yet, we just keep on sewing summer dresses.

Tea party

De man des huizes imiteerde laatst mijn loopschoenen die zielig lagen te wezen in de garage. Ik repliceerde met het eenzame gejammer van mijn naaimachine. Want het was waar, dàt was nòg langer geleden.

En dat ik het voelde: het lontje wat korter, de tenen wat langer, de batterijtjes wat platter…

Drie jurkjes later was de mist al wat opgeklaard.

Het zal wel nostalgie zijn, dat me doet teruggrijpen naar dit patroontje. Ik zie mijn jongste meisje nog wankel haar eerste stapjes zetten in haar tea party dress. Drie jurkjes voor drie kleine meisjes die nog een cadeautje tegoed hadden.

“Do more of what makes you happy”  

Somehow  I forgot, how sewing saves my sanity. Almost 3 months without my sewing machine felt like waaaaay to long.

Ik schafte me het patroontje al meer dan een jaar geleden aan terwijl ik broedde op een verjaardagscadeautje.  Ik haalde de deadline niet, kocht een ander cadeautje en schoof het project op de lange baan…

Een jaartje later dook ik het patroontje weer op voor hetzelfde poppenmoedertje dat een jaartje ouder werd.

Laatst werd iedereen wild van ananassen, nu zijn het wandelende takken, … ooit waren het appels. Maar canvas appels verwerken zich minder gemakkelijk dan soepele katoentjes. En zo bleef dat lapje stof wachten op een geschikt project.

Het kussentje en matrasje zijn omkeerbaar.

Volgende keer maak ik de voering ietsje kleiner en ga ik op zoek naar nog iets stevigere vlieseline. Er staan er hier al drie te popelen.

Die kleine meisjes jurkjes blijven altijd zo hard scoren qua schattigheidsgehalte bij mij ! Ik krijg er eigenlijk zin in om ook eens een Janneke te maken voor mijn nichtje … (misschien heb ik wel eens even tijd in de vakantie). En eerlijk … ik doe ook heel graag mee voor de mooie stempel.

A whole year of procrastination, but finally I sewed this little doll basket together. Next time I’m making the lining a bit smaller.  Some more sturdy interfacing might be worth the effort too.

Tomorrow… tomorrow…

We don’t go to the movies often. But every once in a while it’s a fun family outing.

Earlier this year we saw Annie in the theatre, a modern version of the Broadway classic. My girls loved it!  I ended up buying the cd so they could enjoy the songs over and over again (and again and again and again….).

Last week I received a phone call from a friend. Her daughter really wanted a “Annie-themed” birthday party but a red dress with a bow was nowhere to be found. She had the perfect fabric in her hands…

Off course I said yes. But I must say I hesitated a little. That polysatin fabric is not the easiest fabric to say the least and drawing my own patterns is a skill I have not mastered yet.

The scallops in the bodice made me think of this book. I started out with the bodice of Whiskers, added some scallops to the neckline and mixed it with the bodice of Burda 9545. The skirt is made of two gathered rectangles using the whole width of the fabric. I didn’t have the time to make a muslin first so the scallops are far from picture perfect. I added some fusible batting to the oversized bow to give it more body. For the back I chose a split that closes with a heart shaped button. Two ballet tutu’s underneath the skirt, gave it some more poof.

Een Annie jurk zoals in de film, dat was de creatieve uitdaging van vorige week. Ik zeg “uitdaging”, want van die gladde polyester stof, daar krijg ik de kriebels van. En zo’n jurk namaken, dat is toch ook even spannend. Maar toen haar mama deze foto’s doorstuurde, moest ik toch lachen. Annie-mission volbracht!

Birthday girls – Give away

Jurkjes naaien… ik denk niet dat ik het ooit beu word. Dit verjaardagspakketje ging begin vorige maand op de post. Een lief Janneke met bijpassend verjaardagskroontje. Al even geleden rolde er nog een jurkje voor een feestvarkentje van de machine.

Voor mijn eigen meisjes zal ik niet gauw naar paars grijpen, maar ik gokte op een voor haar bekende kleurencombinatie.

De stempel vond ik bij Joann’s. Aangezien ik maar blijf twijfelen over het ontwerp van eigen labeltjes, kocht ik hem als tijdelijke oplossing. Stempel op een mooi kaartje, passend lintje erbij, een persoonlijke boodschap op de achterkant en hupla, dat gaat ook.

Bij mijn laatste bezoekje aan Joann’s  zag ik er nog eentje liggen en dacht ik er misschien wel iemand mee te plezieren. Wil je je eigen handgemaakte cadeautjes ook graag voorzien van zo’n labeltje, laat hier dan een reactie na voor 20 juni!

Sewing little dresses, I don’t think I could ever get bored with it. I made both dresses for two sweet birthday girls.

Sewing handmade gifts, it’s always fun to add a personal label but I’m the worst at deciding how my label should look like. So when I ran into this stamp at Joann’s, it took me a whole second to load it in my shopping cart. In fact, I bought two!  And an extra set of baker’s twine and some tags too.

Ishi

I guess there are two types of seamstresses. Those who start with a project in mind and then shop for fabric and those who fall in love with a particular fabric and figure out the destination later.

I’m definitely one of the latter. Fabric first, project later. And yes, the other way around is more efficient in terms of fabric amount. But.I.can’t.help.it.

When An asked me to join her Ishi blog tour, I thought of the bird fabric in my stash straightaway. But I got cold feet knowing fabric combination is so essential for this dress. Heavenly,  I found two matching fabrics right under my nose – what are the odds! – but then I had to decide which fabric to use where. So many options.

After measuring her chest, I decided to make a size 6 for my 8 and a half year old. I wanted the dress to fit her well and the length a little bit shorter than I would normally go for.

I chose a more subtle look for the pockets and decided to cut the pocket pattern piece in two. I cheated a bit and placed the upper part of the pocket piece on the fold, so there is no seam on top. The lower part of the pocket was lined with the solid peach fabric. I topstitched both seams at once before adding the pocket to the side panel.

I made an effort for the back: the birds keep on singing, even with the blind zipper in place.

Living under the Texas heat, I decided not to do any sleeves. I added a bias strip on the inside instead and although I would make the strip less wide  next time, I love how this worked out.

Ik heb er even aan getwijfeld, of dit een modelletje was voor mijn bijna 9 jarige. Maar zolang het bovenaan niet te ruim zou vallen en ik geen te zotte prints zou combineren, dacht ik er haar wel mee te kunnen overtuigen.

En ik ben blij dat ik doorgezet heb. Voor haar niet alleen tof om dragen, voor mij ook tof om in elkaar te steken. Ik ben ondertussen al zo gewoon aan de doorsnee opbouw van een jurkje met een gevoerd bovenstuk, rokdeel en een blinde rits die pas op het einde geïnstalleerd wordt, dat deze werkwijze een plezante afwisseling was.

Ik maakte een paar aanpassingen. Zo ging ik voor een minder opvallende look voor de zakken: de volledige zak in stipjes, zou voor de dochter wat teveel van het goede geweest zijn. En onder de Texaanse zon, hebben we momenteel geen mouwtjes nodig. Het beleg valt niet over het volledige armsgat dus maakte ik een strook biais die ik er langs de binnenkant aan vastnaaide.

Whole Lotta love

“Daar staat mijn naam”, wees de jongste dochter.  Ik knikte instemmend maar vertelde haar dat dit twee jurkjes voor haar oudere zussen werden.

Op slag had ik drie furieuze dochters. Eentje was kwaad omdat ik geen kleedje voor haar maakte, de andere twee wilden absoluut ook een patroon met hun voornaam.

Altijd plezant, zo’n zussen dynamiek.

Ik haalde twee lang gekoesterde Petit Pannetjes uit de kast en combineerde met een effen katoentje. Ik liet me hier inspireren en werkte de zoom onderaan af met de voeringsstof waar ik een strook biaisband van maakte.

De jurken zijn net ietsje te lang, maar met een nieuw blote benen seizoen dat wel tot november door kan lopen, neem ik graag een paar centimetertjes reserve.

“I know”, I reassured her. “But I’m actually planning two new dresses for your sisters”

And there you have it: three (!) drama queens. The youngest throwing a tantrum because she was not getting a new dress, the other two upset because they also wanted a pattern called after their first name. 

Oh, how this household comes with a lot of drama…

I bought both prints a long time ago in my hometown. Petit Pan fabrics have their home base in Paris and they are truly one of my all time favorites. If only a retailer would carry them here in the States.

And little miss Lotta…. off course  she’s getting her own Lotta dress… but first I have a zillion other things on my to do list…

a “berry” wild dress

Yay! It’s Kids clothes week again! Time to celebrate spring… although here in Texas the summer heat is sneaking up on us already.

I absolutely love this “wild things” edition but I decided not to go with the theme. I’ve done my fair share of “wild things” sewing, but my girls get more picky. The bolder the prints, the longer it stays in their closet. On top of that, my oldest is on a handmade clothes strike for school wear. “All the kids in school wear only store bought clothes, mom”. I sigh, hoping this too shall pass and I’m grateful to have two more daughters.

This dress however … is a game changer! She LOVES it (I will not let her wear it for school though). When I bought the fabric (after these tops turned out lovely), I thought it would make a great summer dress.

My oldest adores the open back and the big pockets. I have read this post carefully and made the same changes (the skirt less wide and a 6y for my 8y old. At the end I took it in another 1/2 inch to prevent a gaping back).

My lack of patience won over my strive for perfection…always happens to me when I sew a pattern for the first time.

Juij! Het is Kids Clothes week! Het lukte me nog net om één zomerkleedje voor de oudste dochter af te werken. Geen wilde beesten of hippe ananassen maar lieflijke aardbeitjes (of wilde bosaardbeien zoals Bieke op Instagram suggereerde). Het is tegenwoordig niet gemakkelijk om haar blij te maken met handgemaakt gerief maar met deze jurk werd er gescoord. Hoera!

Stellar Tee

Af en toe val ik eens met mijn gat in de boter. Zoals toen ik tijdens de vorige editie van KCW een give away won en hemels verwend werd met maar liefst zeven Figgy’s patronen.

The Stellar Tunic sprong er voor mij onmiddellijk uit. En de combinatie van tricot en katoen was iets wat ik al langer wou proberen.

Geen fan zijnde van het patchwork effect, plakte ik de zorgvuldig uitgeknipte patroondelen van de mouw weer netjes aan elkaar (rekening houdend met de inbegrepen naadwaarde). De halve yard tricot overschotjes waren te kort voor een tuniekje, dus werd het patroon ingekort tot T-shirt lengte.

Voor de eerste shirt volgde ik vervolgens netjes de handleiding. Enkel voor de halslijn gebruikte ik de overlock en niet de voorgestelde biais methode. En jammer maar helaas, de halslijn achteraan golft en is te breed.  Ik moet nog mijn moed bij elkaar rapen om die terug los te tornen.

Voor de tweede shirt paste ik het patroon aan en voorzag kapmouwtjes. Ik versmalde het tricot deel van het achterpand enkele cm, versmalde de halsboord en maakte diezelfde ook een paar cm korter. Ik pinde de halsboord ook in 4 gelijke delen aan de neklijn waar er 2 markeerpunten niet overeen komen met de schoudernaad (zoals voorgeschreven in de handleiding) maar er een tweetal cm voorbij. De halslijn is vooraan immers iets dieper. Ik werkte de kapmouwtjes ook af met biais binnenin in plaats van om te zomen.

Winning the Figgy’s give away definitely made my last KCW edition. I was heavenly spoiled. 

 For the Stellar Tunic, I decided to go for a more simple look and pasted the pattern pieces for the sleeves back together (including the seam allowances). I shortened the pattern a couple of inches as my knit fabric was not long enough to make a tunic. 

The first tee was a good fit, only I did not like the neckband at the back. It turned out too wonky and too wide. 

For the second tee, I made cap sleeves, sized the knit part of the back down a bit, changed the neckband (shorter and smaller). I also made a change at point 15 in the tutorial. I did not pin the sidepins to the shoulder seams but an inch towards the deeper center front. I also finished the cap sleeves with bias.

Overall I’m quite pleased with the T-shirts. Now I only need to find my courage to change the neckband from the first tee.
